Unfortunately we lost Dennis Stone & Buck during 2010. Dennis used to crew for many years for Russell Moore and I believe they started their sailing partnership sailing at Fowey where Russell lives, but the lure of sailing a Tasar and sailing in our fleet on the sea instead of a Wayfarer in Fowey harbour brought them over to us; where they sailed for over 10 seasons. The Dennis Stone Trophy which was presented for the first time this year was bought for the Club by some of Dennis's closest friends. Some of them attended tonight's dinner and the trophy was presented by Dennis's wife, Margaret who also presented all the other perpetual trophies as well.

Buck used to crew for the late Les Wightman well over 25 years ago and though he hadn’t sailed for many years was still a Club member and used to enjoy just coming down, watching the racing and being in our company. Buck was the only one of his family living down here so it was quite a pilgrimage and an honour to him that 19 of his relatives travelled to Cornwall, from as far away as Scotland and London to share in the evening with us. Buck's family had asked for any donations at his funeral to be made to Porthpean SC and from the donations a new trophy was also purchased now known as the "Buck Cup". This was presented by his Grand Daughter Carrie.

Both trophies were awarded for one of the monthly Cup races which are handicap races so eligible for all to compete in.

This year we had returned to the Cliff Head, mainly because it is capable of hosting the large sort of turn out that our annual dinner attracts, plus there was lots of room for a band area where we were entertained by the group High Tide. We had elected to start the evening early to give us time for a few speeches, raffle and prizegiving, and by 10.00 the music was booming out and the boogying began.

Chris Hazell was elected Commodore in December, so it was a new experience for him to stand in front of us all and say a few words to us and reminding us of our achievements of holding many, many Nationals over the years, culminating in the Osprey Nationals last year. The Osprey fleet had returned for a 2nd Nationals with us and so pleased with the friendliness and expertise shown by the Club have already booked to return for their 60th anniversary.

Once again, our Membership excelled itself by the standard of dress. Most of the time we are usually in casual clothes or sailing clothes, but many of the men wore dinner jackets, with their accompanying ladies in evening gowns, even those not in DJs had on smart suits, so all in all a very smart appearance from all We also had quite a few youngsters with us, who one day hopefully will be next generation of mature sailors.
