2012 August Cup
August 4th

It seems such a long time that we had a social down at the Club. In fact I think the last social was the Fitting Out Supper, way back in March. Here we are just over half way through this predominantly windy season, but at least we are in the height of summer. Even though this isn’t the warmest of summers there was still enough warmth around to tempt quite a few people down on Saturday night to sample Simon’s Pizza Emporium. This was the first outing for Simon and his business; we were very interested to see it as we have booked Simon for one of the social nights for the forthcoming Tasar Nationals. Judging by all the compliments, it looks like it is going to be a winner. Probably the most difficult task was manoeuvring it into the yard, but once a few boats had been moved and the necessary muscle power provided then all went smoothly.

Quite a large crowd gathered around to watch the pizzas being prepared and placed into the oven. Each pizza was cooked to order with a variety of toppings available. The cooking took about 2 minutes for each pizza and they came out of the oven looking excellent and were very tasty indeed. I think Simon’s business will soon be well established and he should do very well out of it.

The RNLI also had a major presence at the Club, bringing a “D” class lifeboat which was wheeled into the yard for us to prod and poke and look at all the equipment that they contain. We were told that it costs £39,000 to put one of these boats fully equipped on the water and that they are probably the most well used of all the lifeboats, due to their calls for holiday makers being cut off by rising tides or stuck on inaccessible rocks. The RNLI night continued after the pizzas with a talk and a slide show on the RNLI presented by Tamsin Thomas who is the PR manager for the whole of the south west. A quiz produced by Tamsin followed and we were divided into teams. The winning team was captained by Brian Phillips, but this was a quiz with no losers as all the teams were given a prize as their scores were revealed.

As usual I moved around taking a few pictures of people for posterity. Clicking on any picture should produce a larger version.
