2015 Club Walk - Fowey Hall Walk
March 8th 2015

The day started out looking rather bleak for the planned annual club walk. This year Tony chose the Hall walk around Fowey and Polruan to test the fitness of those attending. From walks in the past we were expecting something like 40 walkers; as it was, 8 valiant walkers met in Readymoney Car Park and changed into their wet weather gear. Yes the miserable wet weather and forecast had killed off the enthusiasm of most of the expected walkers.

Although it was wet it wasn't quite the heavy rain that was forecast. Those that know the word "mizzle" would know how it was. Anyway after a photo call we set off through the streets of Fowey making our way to Boddinick Ferry to cross the river..

After the river crossing things changed in several ways. First it stopped raining, and the second thing was that we started the uphill section off road and through the woods with the delightful Pol estuary sighted through the trees. The going underfoot was better than expected and steady progress was made, though several short breaks were made to take in the distant views and allowed us to stay together, as we don't all walk at the same pace!!

Just as we started the final down hill stretch into Polruan we encountered a sudden diversion as the foot path further on had been dangerously compromised in the recent bad weather and we had to detour up the steepest footpath I have ever seen. Eventually we reached Polruan and went to The Russell Inn for a well earned lunch. Tony had phoned ahead and tables had been reserved for the group.

The Russell Inn has a new landlord and lady and they seem to be settling in nicely and if the food served today is anything to go by, then they will do well. Full marks!!

After a relaxing break it was time to take the foot ferry from Polruan back to Fowey and make our return to the car park to end what turned out to be a most enjoyable walk around our local area.

Dare I say it BUT even the sun came out as we sailed across the Fowey estuary to cheer us all. I set my walking app going when we started the walk and we clocked up 4.63 miles from the start to the pub and then over another mile on our trip back to the car park, covering around 6 miles in total.
