2017 Club Walk - Circum Navigation of Heligan
March 12th 2017

Once again it was time to tune up our leg muscles ready for the start of the sailing season, which is now only 2 weeks away, and line up for the annual Club Walk. In fact today’s walk was probably a shade shorter than usual and definitely shorter than last years when we walked back to St. Austell from the Eden Project. However the end of today’s walk, like last year’s culminated in a Sunday roast.

21 of us plus 3 dogs rendezvoused at the Heligan Gardens car park for a leisurely stroll around the perimeter, taking in a short walk down to Mevagissey itself before returning and completing the circum navigation back to the car park. Then it was off to the Cedars in Pentewan valley, where we had a booking for 12.30 and a roast dinner to look forward to.

We had suffered all week from heavy drizzle and mist but fortunately despite a damp forecast we were blessed with a dry day accompanied by a stiff North West wind. The wind was offshore but was strong enough and gusty enough that we wouldn’t have gone sailing in it, especially at this time of the year when the sea is at its coldest.

We were promised mud and the wet weather of the last 2 weeks certainly ensured that we had plenty of that. It was very slippery in places and we had to tread very carefully to stay on our feet which most of us did apart from Lyn Dunn who slipped over at one stage covering her Jeans in a nice muddy shade of water. Needless to say the dogs loved it and someone had the unenviable job of cleaning them off when they arrived home.

Paddy had bought a new pair of wellington boots especially for the walk and by the time we finished they had been well and truly christened, having said that they were ideal for the day’s conditions.

I don’t think many of our members had been to the Cedars before but it is an ideal size and location for a small function.
