When organising the annual club walk you have to hope that on the day the weather is kind to you. There is a breeze, there is wind, and there is the kind of gale force wind that sweeps across Bodmin Moor when Porthpean has it's annual walk. I had organised the walk for today to be from Minions to the Cheesewring and taking in Gold Diggings Quarry before returning to the car Park. 10 hardy souls gathered at the arranged time in the car park, all commenting on “the weather”. Now normally it's the usual practice to get a member of the public to take a group photo for us before we set off walking.
Today there were no other people daft enough to be standing around to do the honours. It might have been windy but at least it was dry. Although damp under foot, the going was easy as we ventured towards The Cheesewring. Easy if you could lean into the wind far enough that is !! Time for the photo whilst we were still all standing. It was at this stage of the walk that some found the conditions unfavourable and nothing like a Sunday morning stroll so our numbers were depleted for the second stretch of the Moor to take in Gold Diggings Quarry. It was then that we were caught in a quick hail storm. Yes what an adventure it was turning out to be. Rather than having a quick dip in the water at the quarry it was decided to head back to the car park and re-group with our fellow hikers.
As is the custom on these days, it has to be rounded off with a trip to a pub for lunch. The Cheesewring PH was the obvious choice and what a good one it turned out to be. They managed to fit us in on the first sitting for what was to be a really good Sunday Roast lunch.
So, to sum up....... We went, we walked, we ate and drank. We had a good laugh and really isn't that what it's all about ?
