Skiing Holiday 2003

This year, in March ,7 intrepid members + 2 friends embarqued on an expedition to the ski slopes of Italy. Our group ranged in experience, from fairly confident to totally naive . The latter who shall remain nameless (Ian ), proved to be less innocent when it came to stretching classes with a big bottomed wench, after ski lessons. The resort of Bardoneccia was close to the French border,(never mind ) and had two areas for skiing. Our first impressions were marred by the long wait at Turin airport on a coach, where we encountered Penny, a lone skier who was a mine of information, and continued to be so throughout the week!! We wondered what we would have talked about at dinner had we not had Penny joining us each day, kindly sharing her expertise amongst our men.

There was a decided lack of snow at lower levels and large areas appeared bare on the surrounding slopes. The weather was hot and sunny and had been for three weeks, so it was a miracle there was any snow left. There was in fact plenty on the upper slopes, and these were a little icy first thing, but as the day wore on so the slopes softened, and our faces burned. We had opted to stay in a Hotel in the town, and we enjoyed the good food laid on for us, as well as the extra curricular activities like stretching classes, quizzes, cards and pre dinner drinks in each other’s rooms ! Our skiing improved as the week went on, mainly due to the new shorter carver skis that are standard gear now. A certain member of our party remained stubborn about using his old (1897) skis, but when at last he emptied out his pockets and rented some new ones, he was amazed at the difference in his ability (his skiing improved too). John practised whatever Penny showed him on the slopes as well.

Every day we tried pastures new, and enjoyed meeting up for lunch and mulled wine, (Paul ) at one of the Alpine restaurants, where we were able to strip off and sunbathe in our crop tops (Jenny ). Anyway a good time was had and all credit to Ian who learnt to ski pretty well by the end and got a certificate (stretching ).Thanks to Pam and Jenny for taking me in hand one day so I can ski downhill and not uphill now…. Anyone wanting to be so foolish as to join us on another trip sometime, contact Jenny March, Pam Jenkin, or Linda Hill.
