In the early hours of 17th November 2010, Mid Cornwall was subjected to an exceptionally heavy rainfall. So intense was the rain that parts of Lostwithiel, Pentewan & Mevagissey were all flooded. Unbeknown to us at the time the hedge bordering the footpath from the field down to the Club had also suffered extensive damage. Every year the footpath below the bottom gate has been flooded by a spring, but this time, with the addition of the heavy rain, the hedge bordering the footpath was undermined and a large section of the hedge complete with two trees collapsed onto the beach below leaving us with a 50’ drop and the prospect that the rest of the footpath could follow the hedge over the side at any time. Part of the footpath from the field also happened to be a section of the Coastal footpath, so the Council had no option but to close off the damaged area for the foreseeable future, which in turn stopped us using the gateway, causing us a major problem should we need to move boats in and out of the field. As it was November we weren’t too inconvenienced as most people were using the car park rather than the wet field, but it would certainly cause us problems in the main sailing season. Fortunately there was a compromise which was convenient for both the Council and the Club. The Council wanted to reinstate the footpath and we needed access from the beach to field so an agreement between the Council and the Club was drawn up, where we gave part of the field to the Council so that they could restore the footpath and at the same time they gave us a new gateway to access the field complete with a new concrete path to get to the gate. There was also enough concrete left over to enable us to repair the bottom section of the path that had been crumbling away and had deteriorated badly over the winter. All the work has been carried out by the Council and was completed just in time for the start of the 2011 sailing season.
